Desmond's Piece of Mind...

The day has arrived ladies and jellyfish...

Someone gave me the opportunity speak intelligently about some of what is important (Hip-Hop, Culture, Art, Converting Oxygen to Carbon Dioxide, Individuality, Creative Process, Relativity, Politricks, Insects, Bubble Gum, and a whole lot of other poop) and that only as far as I'm concerned.

Who am I you ask?

Valid question. My birth certificate say's Desmond David Montoya and in my 33 years I've had several alias's but, with over 20 years of Identifying as an M.C. (master of ceremonies (MC or emcee), or compere, is the official host of a staged event or similar performance. An MC usually presents performers, speaks to the audience, and generally keeps the event moving. An MC may also tell jokes or anecdotes. The MC sometimes also acts as the protocol officer during an official state function. In hip hop music, rock music and electronic dance music, an MC is a music artist and/or performer who usually creates and performs vocals for his/her own original material.) Emcee Ewok One was the "Alias" that stuck.

ARTIST BIO
His career span's a large time period, but being a "late bloomer" (as far as his Career in Recording and Distributing his Music) only gave him more incentive to get it done correctly. So as an Emcee there's some things he had to learn regarding Rhyme, Rhythm & Delivery. Being witty and observant served him well in Battles & Cyphers, which he use to frequent (between 93-99 spots like U.N.I.T.Y, Project Blowed, Foundation, Beats-Rhymes & Life, Elements, etc) & now does again, for the further advancement of his career. As long as he keeps that in mind, "stay grounded, humble, he feels he can play a vital role in maintaining the structural integrity of the beloved Culture".

MORE ABOUT M.C. EWOK ONE
Emcee Ewok One one was born Desmond Montoya on the 10th of September in the year 1979 in Hawaiian Gardens. Raised by his Grandparents in the city of Norwalk with his Older Brother's having a strong Musical Influence on him, Oldest Brother Kevin played Both Alto/Tenor Saxophone in his High School Jazz Band while other Older Brother Eugene was the DJ of a 1980's Party Crew both becoming the Catalyst of where his Love for Music evolved. So at a young age being exposed to an Eclectic Array of Jazz as well as Breaks he felt a Natural Attraction towards Hip Hop and the Elements attributed.

Saying a whole lot without having to say a whole lot, say's something to the m.c. Ewok "persona" he envelop's. "Music's a universal communication, so when we create from pure silence what we channel, and not to mention how we communicate it as well should be determined by the artist". So he utilizes the resources available like Revernation and others to further advance his "freedom of expression" in an attempt to establish his art in the history of music. In his pursuit towards being an established Independent Artist he's overcame many challenging obstacles and evolved into now not only a Lyricist but Music Producer/ Graphic Design/ Music Engineering as well. Working with talented individuals who share the same ambitions also help nurture his creative process.
A TRUE MASTER OF CEREMONIES
m.c. Ewok one embodies the true meaning of what a m.c. means. Not only has he rocked mic’s but he has hosted at one of Pomona’s hottest venue’s from March 2011 - October 2011. While he was paying dues and establishing his name in Hip Hop, he had worked and kept close relationships with several promoters. Jelani the events promoter and founder of Da Ill Spot and who is also associated with The Noise Academy extended the opportunity for him to be the new host of Da Ill Spot. m.c. Ewok one hosted his first gig at the Crew on Crew song battle. You can catch the monthly Hip hop show which takes place every 3rd Friday at the Aladdin Jr. II. In Pomona, CA

More recently in February of 2012 i was granted the opportunity to Host a Show with a Non-Profit Online Radio Station OptionX Radio so i named my Show "Audibly Legible" Tuesday's at 7 p.m.
Fans, Artist's, Producers, DJ's... Wanna listen to music that you wanna hear? Wanna have another platform to Broadcast your Music? Audibly Legible facilitate's that need an Interactive Broadcast that reminds us of why we love this Music.

Until February 2011 i preformed as a Solo Artist in a sleuth of show's i was "rocking" at the time. I did one at a place named "Jakes Burgers" in Pasadena called "Word Play Thursday" Hosted by Namek & Arkyve from a Local Group named "Chamber Records". It was there i caught a Performance from another Local Group named "Weapon of the Masses" that blew my proverbial mind. They're cadence, rhyme, rhythm, and delivery was out of context with what the underground sounded like at that time (and still does). I automatically identified with there brand of Hip-Hop. Little did i know they were stoked by my attention to the Elements as well later confirmed outside over a cigarette where i found out we were neighbors at the time and thought maybe a "collaboration" might be in order. After a couple "collab's" and show's together the member Dubler aka Black Xmass said to me after Rocking the Stage together at the Rehab in IE "As far as I concerned Ewok's a Weapon" Ed & Trav said yup and it was official. The rest is history.

And in September of 2012 the Crew became the Newest Members of another Crew "C.O.L.A" short for "Creators Of Lost Art"

-Established in 2000. C.O.L.A., (Creators of the Lost Arts), was created to provide an outlet of resources, tools and information for inspiring independent artists within the Hiphop culture, that DO NOT wish to become "mainstream" and strive to be unconfined to constraints. We accept artists from all 5 basic elements of HipHop. What started out as a project has now expanded to full on production from Beats, Screen Printing, CD Duplication to Recording and Mastering.
We started off independent and will remain independent...

So this is my back round that lead me to this position i was extended by Milinda, Corrin, and Justin who i'm sure you all know are the faces of Piece Magazine and Genuinely Good Friends of mine . So in the words of my favorite Emcee (Aceyalone) "This is the shape of things to come". Let's make Desmond's Piece of Mind, Piece Magazine and OptionX and Huskey Radio, Weapon of the Masses, m.c. Ewok one household names.

Hip Hop for Humanity Canned Food Drive

Piece had been looking forward to this event for weeks. When we heard about a chance to give back to the community, especially where a couple of us grew up, we jumped on board right away. The 2nd Annual Hip Hop for Humanity Canned Food Drive was held Saturday December 10 at Store 86 in Covina, CA from 10am – 6pm. At this event anyone can bring in 5 cans of food to donate and you get a goodie bag with music and merchandise in exchange. As a music lover this is something you can't pass up! All donations go towards the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

This event was started by Angie Rodriguez, also known as Tenochtitlan, two years ago. Rodriguez has been volunteering at food banks, events and missions since the age of fourteen. While volunteering, she noticed the supply was not meeting the demand. Angie wanted to fix that, so she contacted Priscilla of Store 86 to see if they could collaborate on the Hip Hop for Humanity Canned Food Drive. Both parties were on board with giving back to the community so it was the perfect union. They want to show that the Hip Hop community is about giving back just as much as any other organization.“Real love from the community comes out,” says Killa Cal.

While volunteering, Angie would notice a decline in the quality of  the food given out as the day went on and she wanted to fix that. This is were the inspiration for Hip Hop for Humanity was born. Last year the goal was 300 lbs. and the total intake was over 1000 lbs. Priscilla and Angie agreed it was such a success last year they had to do it again this year. “Everyone deserves to eat a decent meal,” stated Angie.
Angie herself is an independent Hip Hop artist and approached other independent artists and clothing lines for donations for the event. She was taken back by how quickly artists and companies jumped on board. Artists such as Pawz, 2Mex, Sick Jacken of Psycho Realm and so much more!

Sick Jacken says, “Community help is always good, something I always support.”

She would like Hip Hop for Humanity to be a true non-profit organization helping out the community all year round. Her goal for next year is to reach out to more corporate sponsors.
“These donations go out to people who need real help and it’s a good barter system,” Says Angie, “and it’s positive representation for a historically negative genre.”
The turn out Saturday was massive; there were lines before the event started. It’s good to see so much support for those who are facing hard times all year round. Much love to everyone who came out and supported this event!

Support the Arts, Support the Needy

This Saturday Store 86 on Shopper’s Lane in Covina, CA will host their 2nd Annual Hip Hop for Humanity Food Drive from 10am- 6pm presented by Temple of Teno Music and BSIDESHOW.NET. This food drive will support the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. This food drive fills a void that Covina and the surrounding areas need. There has not been a fully operational food bank serving this community since 2004 and it was located just down the way from Saturday’s food drive.

The West Covina Community Food Bank was located across the street from the Eastland Shopping Center. The food bank received donations from local markets, churches and made a weekly trip to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. In place of the food bank and many other businesses, a car dealership was built in 2004 and remains there to this day. Unfortunately for the food bank, since they were not required to pay property taxes, and the other businesses on the lot they lost out to a bid by the dealership.

Since then, food drives like Hip Hop for Humanity are important to supply the surrounding churches and other pantries that fill this gap. Also, this food drive has a lot of great entertainment and giveaways planned in exchange for your canned food donations. There are events planned throughout the day so bring some cans and join the festivities.

Kraftwerk and thier Influence

Four years ago I had the privilege of seeing one of music's leading pioneers in electronic and Hip-Hop music. Kraftwerk. I can't say  that I wasn't excited to bits! They had human looking robots performing rather than them on stage, moving knobs and playing synthesizer keys. I couldn't believe it! For those of you who don't know what I was so stoked about here's a little information about who Kraftwerk is.

In Germany, 1970 when the world was taking acid and smoking tons of pot, the founding members of Kraftwerk Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider were probably in their basements honing their craft. These guys were way ahead of their time using computer sounds to produce at that time music that was only experimented with. The vocoder, programmed computers, flutes and synthesizers were just a few instruments they used to make groundbreaking music that would influence and change the music world. The group has been around for over several decades and has gone through about 11 members.

In 1974 Autobahn was released. This album was their ticket to the US, Canada and the UK. In 1978 Kraftwerk released The man the machine. Four years later, the Hip-Hop group The Fearless Four released "Rockin it" sampling The man the machine.

Computers were on the rise within society in the 80's. This is what Kraftwerk wanted to reflect in their 1981 album Computer World. "It's more fun to compute" was a track released on that album which later influenced Hip-Hop group Afro Rican's "Give it all you got".

1983 held one of Kraftwerk's most influential pieces. "Tour de France" was one of their most complicated songs because of the set of variants. It took the group to #22 in the UK singles chart. Within that same year one of the originators of break beat DJing, African Bambaataa sampled Tour de France producing "Planet Rock"

Growing up as an 80's kid I remember watching the break dancing movie "Breakin". In the movie there is a scene were Turbo, a b-boy dances with a broom. In that famous scene the song he dances to is Kraftwerks Tour de France.

Throughout the years up until present time we still hear Kraftwerk's influence. Not only through Hip-Hop but through electronic music and other genres. So if you haven't had the chance to listen to Kraftwerk I suggest you put your robot ears on and do it.
